How JBK Operates

At JBK Border Collies, puppies are bred deliberately and placed with intention.

This page outlines how JBK raises puppies, the standards maintained prior to placement, and the expectations that apply once a puppy leaves the program.

JBK dogs are not produced for casual ownership. They are bred for structure, soundness, temperament, and the the ability to succeed as stable, capable companions and in structured pursuits where appropriate. Ownership carries responsibility long after pickup day.

Ownership Expectations

JBK dogs require proactive, structured ownership. They are not suited for passive environments or inconsistent management.

Owners are expected to:

  • Provide daily structure, routine, and supervision

  • Commit to ongoing training and development

  • Meet physical and mental exercise requirements appropriate to the breed

  • Manage the dog’s environment intentionally

  • Make long-term decisions with soundness, stability, and welfare in mind

A fenced yard does not replace training or engagement. Good intentions without follow-through are insufficient.

Health and Veterinary Care
JBK puppies are raised with a focus on sound development, stable environments, and appropriate management rather than routine veterinary intervention. Puppies do not visit a veterinary clinic prior to placement unless required for priority cargo air transport.

Veterinary exposure at a young age is not inherently beneficial and can introduce unnecessary stress and disease risk. Puppies are monitored closely throughout development, and veterinary care is utilized when clinically indicated by transport regulations.

Vaccinations

Puppies receive age-appropriate vaccinations before pickup. Owners must continue vaccinations according to veterinary guidance and establish care with their veterinarian within 48 hours of pickup.

Parasite Prevention

Puppies are placed on a regular deworming schedule prior to leaving JBK. Owners are responsible for implementing an appropriate parasite prevention program based on their environment and veterinary recommendations.

Nutrition

JBK puppies are started on and raised with Purina Pro Plan–formulated diets selected to support steady growth, skeletal development, and long-term soundness. Owners are expected to continue feeding an appropriate Purina Pro Plan product or a nutritionally equivalent performance-based diet. Overfeeding, rapid growth protocols, or unbalanced diets are not recommended.

Genetics

Parent dogs are selected based on comprehensive evaluation and are free from known serious hereditary conditions at the time of breeding. JBK conducts health testing that meets and exceeds standard breed and registry recommendations, including testing for multiple hereditary conditions not universally required. This testing informs breeding decisions but does not constitute a guarantee regarding future health, structure, or performance.

Training & Development

Training begins the moment a puppy enters its new home. Early structure, consistency, and clear communication are essential.

JBK emphasizes:

  • Calm, consistent handling

  • Early boundary setting

  • Developmentally appropriate exposure

  • Owner involvement in training at every stage

Professional training can be a valuable tool but does not replace daily management and owner responsibility.

Home Environment & Lifestyle Fit

Prospective owners must realistically assess whether a JBK dog fits their lifestyle.

Considerations include:

  • Time availability for training and engagement

  • Supervision inside the home

  • Compatibility with children and other dogs

  • Physical activity and mental stimulation needs

These dogs thrive when expectations and environment are aligned. Mismatch leads to avoidable issues.

AKC Registration

All JBK puppies are registered with the American Kennel Club by JBK following purchase. AKC registration of 100% of dogs produced is required to maintain JBK’s Breeder of Merit status. Registration is completed online and submitted directly by JBK; buyers do not register puppies themselves.

At the time of AKC registration, each puppy is microchipped by JBK through AKC Reunite, and the microchip information is recorded with the registration. Buyers receive an email confirmation once registration is submitted, and AKC mails the official hard-copy paperwork directly to the owner.

Spay / Neuter Policy

JBK requires that dogs placed as companions or performance prospects not be spayed or neutered prior to 24 months of age. Delaying alteration until full maturity is critical for proper physical development, mental stability, and long-term soundness.

Early spay or neuter can negatively impact growth, structure, and behavioral development and is not recommended. Any deviation from this policy must be discussed with JBK in advance.

Health Policy

JBK does not offer a written health guarantee. Life carries no guarantees—of birth, longevity, or outcome—and no breeder can ethically promise otherwise.

Breeding decisions at JBK are made with care and responsibility. Parent dogs are selected based on comprehensive evaluation and are free from known serious hereditary conditions at the time of breeding. In addition, JBK conducts and exceeds standard testing for multiple hereditary conditions, including those not typically classified as serious. This testing informs breeding decisions but does not constitute a guarantee regarding future health, structure, or performance.

Bringing Your Puppy Home

The transition period is critical to long-term success.

Owners should expect:

  • A brief decompression period following pickup

  • Adjustment to a new routine over the first several weeks

  • Continued development over the first several months

Patience, structure, and consistency are essential during this phase.
