JBK Pet Salon

With over 30 years in healthcare and a lifelong foundation in animal husbandry and nutrition, JBK Pet Salon is built on more than grooming alone. Each dog is handled with informed attention to coat integrity, skin health, structure, and overall wellbeing.

Grooming here is approached as preventive care — with disciplined detail, early awareness of potential concerns, and steady, experienced hands. Clients receive educated observation and clear guidance rooted in long-term canine health, not just appearance.

This background provides the foundation for a practical, experience-based approach to grooming that prioritizes the dog’s comfort, hygiene, and overall condition.

“This experience shapes the standard of care used throughout JBK."

Structured. Calm. Professional.

JBK Pet Salon is a controlled, low-traffic grooming environment designed for dogs that need focus, patience, and clarity.

I work with well-behaved dogs, senior dogs, and dogs that may struggle with anxiety or grooming challenges. If your dog is reactive, fearful, difficult to handle, or has behavioral concerns, I will consider them — but I must be informed up front. Transparency matters.

This is not a high-volume, walk-in salon. It is structured, quiet, and intentional.

Curbside Service

JBK Pet Salon operates curbside only.

This allows for:

• Quicker drop-off and pickup
• Reduced stimulation for anxious dogs
• Convenience for clients heading to work
• Ease for senior clients

It maintains safety, efficiency, and a more private experience — an elevated service approach within a down-home country setting.

The Environment

The salon atmosphere is steady and controlled.

• No client traffic throughout the day
• No lobby congestion
• No constant in-and-out interruptions

The television remains on for background familiarity.
Music plays at a consistent level.
I work in a focused setting to maintain calm energy.

This structure supports dogs prone to anxiety, overstimulation, or grooming-related stress.

Dog Reactions & Grooming Behavior
Dogs respond to grooming environments in different ways. Some are excited to arrive, while others may appear anxious at drop-off. This is normal. Grooming involves handling, sounds, equipment, and routines that are unfamiliar or physically demanding for some dogs.

A dog’s behavior at arrival does not reflect how they are treated during their appointment. Many dogs that seem nervous with their owner present will settle quickly once the grooming process begins and they are calmly handled in a controlled, quiet setting.

Our focus is always on safe handling, low-stress techniques, and adjusting the grooming approach to each dog’s individual comfort level. The goal is not to force compliance, but to create a positive, manageable experience for every dog.

JBK Pet Salon provides full grooming services only.

Corrective Grooming

Occasionally a dog arrives with a coat that has become severely matted. This can happen for many reasons — health issues, life circumstances, aging pets, or grooming maintenance simply falling behind.

Our role is not to judge the situation. Our responsibility is to safely and humanely restore the dog’s comfort.

When matting is extensive, the safest and most humane option is often to remove the coat completely so the skin and ears can be properly evaluated. In some cases, matting can conceal skin infections, ear issues, or other medical concerns that only become visible once the coat is removed.

When this occurs, we will inform the owner and recommend veterinary follow-up if necessary.

If your dog’s coat has become matted, you should not feel hesitant about scheduling an appointment. The priority here is relief for the dog and a clean starting point moving forward.

Coat Maintenance & Grooming Schedule

Proper coat care requires routine grooming based on the dog’s coat type, coat texture, and lifestyle.

Most grooming dogs should be maintained on a 4–6 week grooming schedule, while some coat types can be maintained on a 6–8 week schedule depending on coat density and coat growth.

Some owners prefer a short maintenance trim or “summer cut.” Dogs kept in this style often return every 10–12 weeks for a smooth haircut with the face, ears, feet, and sanitary areas maintained.

Double-coated breeds — including Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, German Shepherds, and similar coats — benefit from professional grooming and de-shedding approximately every three months. This removes impacted undercoat, keeps the skin clean, and allows the coat to function properly.

Double coats are designed to regulate temperature and protect the skin from environmental exposure, therefore routine shaving of double-coated breeds is generally not recommended as it can negatively affect coat health and regrowth.

In certain situations — such as advanced age, medical conditions, or special lifestyle needs — shorter clips may be considered. Each dog is evaluated individually with the comfort, safety, and welfare of the dog as the priority.

Regardless of coat type or style, coats must be maintained between grooming appointments with regular brushing at home.

Matting Policy

When routine brushing and grooming maintenance are missed, coats can become severely matted, particularly behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar area, and along the body.

When matting occurs:

• The coat cannot be safely brushed out
• The dog must be clipped shorter to remove the matting
• This is done for the dog’s comfort and safety

Why severely matted coats cannot be brushed out

Severe matting forms when loose hair becomes tightly compacted and tangled close to the skin. As the dog moves, these knots pull continuously on the skin, which can cause significant discomfort.

Attempting to brush out heavy matting requires pulling apart hair that is tightly bound at the skin level, which can be extremely painful and may cause skin irritation, bruising, or injury.

For this reason, when matting becomes severe, the safest and most humane option is to remove the coat underneath the matting with clippers rather than attempting to brush it out.

Severely matted coats may require complete coat removal in order to safely and humanely restore the dog’s comfort and coat health.
