Why Doodles Mat So Easily
(And What Your Groomer Wants You to Understand)
Goldendoodles and Labradoodles have become two of the most popular family dogs in America. They are intelligent, affectionate, athletic, wonderful companions.
They are also two of my favorite dogs to groom.
I genuinely enjoy working on these dogs. I love seeing a fluffy doodle leave the salon looking beautiful, feeling comfortable, and wagging its tail.
Unfortunately, they are also among the most misunderstood coat types in the grooming world.
Many owners believe matting simply means a few tangles.
In reality, severe matting changes everything about the grooming process.
My goal with this article isn't to criticize owners.
It's to help you understand what happens long before your groomer ever picks up a pair of clippers.
The Best of Both Breeds...and One of the Most Challenging Coats
One of the reasons people fall in love with doodles is that soft, fluffy teddy bear appearance.
What many owners don't realize is that every doodle coat is different.
Some inherit more of the Poodle coat.
Others inherit more of the Retriever coat.
Most inherit a combination of both.
That combination often creates one of the highest-maintenance coats in the grooming world.
Unlike many breeds that simply shed loose hair onto your furniture, doodles often trap loose hair deep inside the coat.
As new hair continues growing, the old hair has nowhere to go.
It twists.
It wraps.
It tightens.
Eventually it becomes one solid mat.
The Coat Changes as They Grow
One of the most common things I hear is,
"He never used to mat."
You're probably right.
Puppy coats are usually much easier to maintain.
Then somewhere between six and eighteen months of age, the adult coat begins replacing the puppy coat.
Loose puppy hair becomes trapped inside the developing adult coat instead of simply falling out.
Matting can seem to appear almost overnight.
Many owners think they've suddenly forgotten how to brush their dog.
The truth is...
The coat changed.
Your grooming routine has to change with it.
Mats Don't Usually Start on the Surface
Another common statement I hear is,
"But I brush him all the time."
I usually believe you.
The problem usually isn't that you aren't brushing.
The problem is that you're brushing the surface.
A doodle can look fluffy and beautiful on top while the hair underneath has already become one continuous layer of matting against the skin.
That's why groomers recommend line brushing, followed by a steel comb all the way to the skin.
The comb tells the truth.
If the comb won't glide through the coat... Neither will my clippers.
Water and Everyday Life Make It Worse
Matting doesn't happen only because a dog wasn't brushed.
It also happens because dogs live normal, active lives.
Swimming.
Bathing.
Morning dew.
Rain.
Harnesses.
Seat belts.
Rolling in the grass.
Sleeping.
Running.
Playing.
Everyday friction slowly tightens loose hairs together.
Small tangles become larger mats.
Large mats become one solid coat.
There Comes a Point When the Coat Cannot Be Saved
This is probably the hardest conversation any groomer has.
Owners often say, "Please save as much coat as possible."
Believe me... I want to.
I love a challenge.
If I believe I can safely preserve coat without causing unnecessary pain or stress, I'll spend the extra time trying.
Sometimes I can save an incredible amount of coat.
Sometimes the matting has already made that impossible.
There comes a point where trying to separate every individual hair is no longer kind to the dog.
It pulls on the skin.
It causes pain.
It creates unnecessary stress.
It increases the risk of skin injuries.
At that point...
Removing the coat isn't taking the easy way out.
It's choosing the most humane option for the dog.
What You Don't See
This is the part most owners never witness.
When your dog arrives severely matted, I have a decision to make.
I can safely remove the coat, give your dog a comfortable bath, finish the groom, and send your dog home feeling wonderful.
Or...
I can spend hours carefully working underneath the matting trying to preserve every inch of healthy coat that can safely be saved.
Most owners never see that process.
They only see the finished haircut.
They don't see the hours spent carefully working underneath mats.
They don't see the patience.
They don't see the concentration.
They don't see the piles of coat that had already been lost long before the dog arrived.
They only see what couldn't be saved.
When I choose to preserve coat, I'm choosing the harder job.
Not because it's easier.
Not because it pays better.
Because I know how much owners love seeing their dogs fluffy.

Every Extra Hour Matters
When you schedule an appointment at JBK Pet Salon, I reserve a specific amount of time just for your dog.
I intentionally limit the number of dogs I groom each day because I want every dog to receive my full attention.
I don't believe in rushing dogs through an assembly line.
When a severely matted dog arrives, that schedule changes.
Instead of spending the expected amount of time grooming your dog, I may spend two, three, or even four times longer trying to preserve coat.
Those extra hours don't just affect one appointment.
They affect the entire day.
They reduce the number of appointments available.
They delay other work.
They require the workday to become longer.
Most importantly... Those hours can never be replaced.
Time Is Something No Groomer Can Replace
When a severely matted dog requires several additional hours, people sometimes think,
"I'm paying for your time."
You're paying for much more than that.
You're paying for years of experience.
Professional equipment.
Blade sharpening.
Equipment maintenance.
Replacement tools.
Professional shampoos and conditioners.
Dryers.
Clippers.
Scissors.
Utilities.
Insurance.
Facility maintenance.
Continuing education.
Most importantly...
You're paying for someone who knows when a coat can safely be saved...
...and when removing it is the kindest decision for the dog.
The grooming fee reflects all of those things.
It does not create more hours in the day.
Time is the one thing no professional can earn back.
Life Happens
I understand that life gets busy.
Children have activities.
Work becomes overwhelming.
People get sick.
Vacations happen.
Schedules change.
I'm not judging anyone because life got in the way.
But your dog's coat continues growing every single day whether life is busy or not.
If you can't make your regular grooming appointment, that's okay.
Just understand that your dog may require much more brushing and combing at home until you can get back on schedule.
Professional grooming and home maintenance work together.
Neither replaces the other.
Your Groomer Isn't Cutting Corners
One of the biggest misconceptions is that groomers shave dogs because it's faster.
The truth is exactly the opposite.
Most groomers would much rather send home a beautifully styled, fluffy doodle.
That's why we became groomers.
When a severely matted doodle leaves with a shorter haircut, it usually isn't because the groomer didn't care.
It's because the coat left no safe alternative.
Your Grooming Appointment Begins at Home
Professional grooming is only one part of maintaining a beautiful doodle coat.
The rest happens at home.
Beautiful coats are created through teamwork between the owner and the groomer.
That means:

Regular brushing.

Line brushing instead of surface brushing.

Combing all the way to the skin.

Routine professional grooming every 4–6 weeks.

Thoroughly drying the coat after swimming or bathing.

Addressing small tangles before they become large mats.

Routine grooming is always less expensive, less stressful, and far more comfortable than trying to reverse months of matting.
No groomer can recreate months of coat maintenance in a single afternoon.
Your groomer can maintain a beautiful coat.
Your groomer cannot perform miracles.

Despite everything you've read, I genuinely love grooming Goldendoodles and Labradoodles.
They're intelligent.
Happy.
Fun.
Full of personality.
Watching a well-maintained doodle leave the salon looking and feeling its very best is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
My goal has never been to shave your dog.
My goal is to keep your dog healthy, comfortable, and looking its absolute best.
If you want that fluffy teddy bear look year-round, the secret isn't finding a different groomer.
The secret is maintaining the coat between appointments.
Because beautiful doodles aren't created on grooming day.
They're maintained every single day.
