People occasionally ask me,
"Why JBK Border Collies?"
The answer isn't one dog, one bloodline, or one championship. It's the result of thousands of decisions made over more than three decades. This isn't a sales pitch. It's simply the story of how JBK Border Collies became JBK.
It Started With One Dog
My first Border Collie came from a friend who raised working Border Collies.
When I arrived, he smiled and said, "Come on over. We're going to set you up with a real dog."
At the time, I owned Australian Shepherds. I had never owned a Border Collie and, if I had seen one before, I probably didn't know what I was looking at. Before I started evaluating the dogs, he made me a deal.
He wrote down the dog he believed would fit me best and folded the paper so I couldn't see it.
"If you choose the same dog I picked," he said, "you won't have to buy it. It'll be yours. If you choose a different one, you'll have to pay for it."
I spent my time watching the dogs, studying them, and finally made my choice. He reached into his pocket, unfolded the piece of paper, looked at it, looked back at me and simply said... "Shit."
I had chosen the very same dog he had written down. True to his word, I didn't buy my first Border Collie. He gave it to me. That gift became the beginning of JBK Border Collies.
Looking back, I realize I wasn't simply getting my first Border Collie.
I was learning how to evaluate one.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
One Question
I didn't build JBK Border Collies by asking,
"What can I produce?" I built it by asking,
"What kind of Border Collie do I want to live with every day?"
That one question has guided every breeding decision I've made since 1994.
Building a Breeding Program
My first Border Collies came from within the United States.
As I learned more about the breed, I developed a clearer picture of the Border Collie I wanted to preserve.
Over the years, I carefully imported dogs from several countries that possessed the qualities I wanted to build upon. At the same time, I occasionally introduced carefully selected dogs from within the United States when they complemented the direction of my breeding program.
As the years passed, other breeders began to understand the direction I was taking. Some chose to become part of that journey by entrusting me with dogs they believed would strengthen the foundation I was building. I have always considered that both an honor and a responsibility.
Every addition had one purpose. To improve the next generation while remaining true to the vision behind JBK Border Collies.
I never bred according to trends.
I bred according to the vision I was trying to build.
What Matters Most
For me, everything starts with structure.
Without correct structure, nothing else lasts. Everything else is built on that foundation.
The next priority was intelligence. I wanted Border Collies that think. Dogs that learn quickly.
Dogs that naturally work with people instead of constantly working against them.
Temperament mattered just as much.
I wanted dogs that were stable, confident, adaptable, and enjoyable to live with every single day.
Athletic ability, natural instinct, and versatility followed naturally from those priorities.
Over time, I also found myself consistently selecting dogs with a practical, moderate coat—enough coat to protect the dog without becoming excessive for everyday life in the South.
People often comment on how beautiful my dogs are, and I appreciate that. But beauty has never been the goal by itself. When you consistently select for correct structure, intelligence, temperament, athletic ability, and breed type, generation after generation, natural beauty has a way of reproducing itself.
Every breeding decision came back to the same question.
What kind of Border Collie do I want to live with every day?
Consistency
After more than three decades, the pedigrees behind my dogs have become overwhelmingly JBK.
Each generation has been built upon the last instead of chasing the latest trend or the newest popular dog.
That consistency has produced Border Collies with a recognizable style, recognizable structure, and recognizable temperament.
Owners have told me they've been approached at dog shows, performance events, parks, and even while walking through their neighborhood by people who recognized their dog as a JBK Border Collie before they ever saw the pedigree.
To me, that's one of the greatest compliments a breeder can receive.
Choosing Puppies
One lesson from my very first Border Collie never changed.
The right dog isn't always the one that first catches your eye.
It's the one that's the best fit.
Today, I spend as much time learning about my puppy buyers as I do evaluating the puppies themselves.
I don't place puppies according to what someone believes is the "perfect" color pattern.
I place puppies where they'll be the best fit for the family, and the family will be the best fit for the puppy.
Every puppy has its own personality. Some naturally lead. Some are quieter observers.
Some mature quickly. Some take a little more time. Matching those personalities to the right home is one of the most important responsibilities I have as a breeder.
Success
Not every JBK Border Collie will compete at a national event.
Not every JBK Border Collie will herd sheep. Not every JBK Border Collie will become a champion.
Some will simply become the best dog a family has ever owned.
Honestly, those are often the success stories that mean the most to me.
Others will excel in obedience, agility, rally, scent work, dock diving, herding, therapy work, search and rescue, or countless other activities. That is exactly what I hoped to create.
Border Collies that are intelligent enough to learn, athletic enough to perform, structurally sound enough to last, and adaptable enough to succeed wherever life takes them.
Looking Forward
I don't believe a breeding program is ever finished.
Every litter teaches something. Every generation presents another opportunity to improve.
Every generation should be an improvement over the one before it. That's been the goal since the very beginning.
